Best Stellenbosch Wine Farm Restaurants: Where to Have Lunch in the Winelands

Compare the best Stellenbosch wine farm restaurants for vineyard lunches, fine dining, picnics, families and wine pairings, with practical advice on where to book.

Updated October 2026

A Stellenbosch wine day should not be planned entirely around tastings. Choosing where to have lunch can matter more than choosing your third or fourth winery, because a good lunch takes about two hours, and the other estates you visit need to be close to it.

The right lunch depends on whether you want fine dining, a casual bistro, a picnic, a family meal or a food-and-wine experience. If you would like a guide to handle the driving, the calendar below books a small-group tour from Cape Town that stops at Delaire Graff and Tokara, two of the estates in this guide, rated 4.6/5 from more than 290 reviews.

Jordan Wine Estate

Jordan is the place to make lunch one of the day’s main experiences. Allow a long, relaxed meal rather than treating it as a quick refuelling stop. The Jordan Restaurant, led by chef George Jardine, has been one of South Africa’s best-known estate restaurants since it opened in 2009.

If you want something lighter, The Bakery at Jordan serves breakfast and lunch every day, with bread from a wood-fired oven. The estate sits in the Stellenbosch Kloof, west of town, and it also has suites if you would like to stay the night; our guide to Stellenbosch wine farm stays covers them.

Delaire Graff

Delaire Graff is best for luxury, art, dramatic views and special occasions. The estate sits at the top of Helshoogte Pass and has three restaurants:

  • Delaire Graff Restaurant, with a terrace looking over the Banghoek Valley
  • Hōseki, a contemporary Japanese restaurant that replaced Indochine in 2023
  • Lorenzo’s, an Italian restaurant with wood-fired pizza and pasta

The Delaire Graff Restaurant served lunch daily and dinner from Wednesday to Saturday when we checked in October 2026. More than 400 works from Laurence Graff’s collection are displayed around the estate, so leave time to walk around before or after you eat. The small-group Stellenbosch and Franschhoek tour spends about an hour and a half at Delaire Graff for a tasting, but its optional lunch is served at Delheim, not here.

Tokara

Tokara is best for combining food, wine, contemporary design and scenery. It is also on Helshoogte Pass, a few minutes from Delaire Graff, and the two suit different itineraries:

  • Tokara Restaurant is the fine-dining choice, with views to Stellenbosch and False Bay.
  • Tokara Delicatessen, next to the estate’s olive oil mill, is casual and child-friendly, with a playground, pizzas and bistro food.

The deli works well on a three-winery day, when you have about an hour for lunch. The restaurant is for a day built around the meal. Tokara is on the same small-group tour as Delaire Graff, with about an hour for the tasting.

The Vine Bistro at Glenelly

The Vine Bistro is best for relaxed French bistro food and wine in a less ceremonial setting. Glenelly was bought in 2003 by May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, formerly the owner of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Bordeaux, and the bistro’s classic French cooking reflects that connection. Chef patron Christophe Dehosse runs the kitchen.

The estate is in Ida’s Valley, about 10 minutes from the centre of Stellenbosch, and it has a glass museum on site. When we checked, the bistro served lunch from Tuesday to Sunday and dinner on Friday and Saturday, and the estate recommends booking. The Stellenbosch North wine safari visits Glenelly for a tasting, along with Rustenberg and Stark-Condé, in an open safari vehicle from Stellenbosch. It is rated 4.8/5 from 20 reviews, and lunch is not included.

Spier

Spier is best for families and groups that want several food formats, outdoor space and activities. Its current venues range from Veld, the fine-dining restaurant, and the Garden Room at the hotel to the casual Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery and picnics on the lawns.

Children have plenty to do: the Elemental Garden nature playground sits next to Vadas, and the farm has walking and biking trails, Segway vineyard tours and art installations. That makes Spier one of the easiest lunches to plan when not everyone in the group has come for the wine.

Warwick

Warwick is best for seasonal picnics and relaxed outdoor lunches. Picnics run in summer, every day from 11:00 to 15:00, and must be booked at least 24 hours ahead. You can sit on the lawn, in the Forest Courtyard or in a private pod, and there are children’s and vegan boxes. Outside the picnic season the estate serves food in its bistro.

In summer Warwick also runs its “Big Five” vineyard safari, a guided drive through the estate’s main grape varieties. The Northern Vine Hopper route from Stellenbosch stops at Warwick, rated 4.6/5 from 53 reviews; tasting fees, the picnic and the safari are paid separately.

Rust en Vrede

Rust en Vrede is best for serious red-wine lovers who want the food to stay closely connected to the wine. The estate is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and red blends, and its food is built around them.

Plan your visit around the time of day. Rust en Vrede Restaurant is a fine-dining restaurant in the estate’s original cellar, open for dinner only, with a set menu and a wine pairing. Chef Fabio Daniel has led the kitchen since 2017, and children under 12 are not admitted. For lunch, the estate’s Winemaker’s Lunch is a simpler meal served daily from 12:00 to 15:00: a choice of steak or salmon with a glass of the estate’s wine.

Fine Dining vs Casual Lunch

Fine dining makes sense when food is a main trip priority. A tasting menu at Tokara, the Jordan Restaurant or Rust en Vrede in the evening is a meal you plan the day around, with one or two wineries before it.

Casual dining fits better into a three-winery day. Tokara Delicatessen, The Bakery at Jordan, Vadas at Spier and a Warwick picnic all let you eat well in about an hour and still reach a third estate before the tasting rooms close.

Best Planning Strategy

Choose the lunch first, reserve it, then select one or two wineries nearby. This prevents unnecessary driving and overbooking.

The estates group naturally. Delaire Graff and Tokara are minutes apart on Helshoogte Pass, on the road to Franschhoek. Glenelly and Warwick are north of town. Jordan and Spier are on the western side, and Rust en Vrede is on Annandale Road, south of town. Pick a lunch in one group and add tastings from the same group.

Every estate here is a drive from the next, so someone needs to stay sober or you need a driver. If you would rather have lunch arranged for you, the Stellenbosch four-estate tour from Cape Town includes lunch along with four tastings and hotel transfers, rated 4.8/5 from more than 270 reviews. It does not name its estates in advance. Our guide to the best Stellenbosch wine farms and the Stellenbosch wine tasting guide help you choose the tastings around your lunch.
